And So It Begins!

My goodness - it’s already a busy season! As spring began poking it’s head tentatively out from the blanket of winter, life has taken a turn for the hectic. Life has offered it’s challenges, but my garden continues to provide me sanctuary.

I started my seeds indoors around the beginning of March in many varieties, but my favorite part of the early growing season has been what’s happening outside. My daily “growth walks” as I call them, have given me quiet moments of excitement as I watch everything change around me in the tiniest and most profound ways.

This is the first growing season I’ve had garden space to grow cold season vegetables and flowers, and it’s been such a joy of green while everything else catches up. My peas are days away from beginning their tenacious climb up the trellis, my lilacs are on the cusp of gorgeous purple blooms, hummingbirds are visiting the feeder with the beautiful twill of their call and my trees are finally leafing out.

My favorite flower is a peony and last year when our landscaping was first installed, I immediately planted a peony bush. We had torrential rain all spring and into the summer and so many of my in-ground plants suffocated in our clayey soil which had been super compacted in our new contruction lot. The peony plant never looked like it was doing too well and I was absolutely certain it wouldn’t come back this year.

A few weeks ago, I was on growth walk and in this space, I have my eye out for the smallest changes. My eyes almost missed the emergence of shoots from my peony, but there they were! The bush is growing incredibly well after enduring conditions many of it’s peers couldn’t handle last year and I couldn’t be more delighted. I can’t wait to share photos of it blooming - I’ll enjoy every bud and every moment!

My schedule is packed already as we move through spring and start looking towards summer with more planting in my own garden as well as getting my hands dirty in the Colorado Master Gardener program. I just love spring!

See you in the garden!
